Active/Passive Firewall High Availability
Redundancy, Failover, Session Synchronization & Security Continuity
UI Operations implemented a high-availability firewall architecture using two Palo Alto Networks firewalls configured in an Active/Passive pair. The deployment included dedicated HA communication links, session synchronization, dynamic routing, consistent security policies, health monitoring, and failover validation.
The solution reduced the risk of a single firewall failure disrupting network operations and established a resilient security foundation aligned with the client’s business continuity requirements.
The client required continuous network availability without compromising security enforcement. A firewall hardware failure, link issue, or planned maintenance event could interrupt business-critical connectivity unless an effective redundancy solution was in place.
A firewall outage could interrupt network connectivity and affect business-critical services.
The environment required reliable failover with minimal interruption to active application sessions.
Security policies, NAT rules, and routing needed to remain consistent when the secondary firewall assumed control.
UI Operations deployed two Palo Alto Networks firewalls as a synchronized HA pair, with one unit actively processing traffic and the second ready to assume responsibility in the event of failure.
The configuration combined dedicated HA connectivity, session synchronization, health monitoring, and synchronized security policies.
Configured primary and secondary PA-5220 firewalls with dedicated HA communication and device synchronization.
Configured session synchronization to help preserve application connectivity during firewall failover.
Implemented dynamic routing, interface health checks, link monitoring, and HA election criteria.
Synchronized security policies, NAT rules, application rules, and virtual router configurations across the HA pair.
The solution uses an Active/Passive firewall pair connected through dedicated HA links. Configuration synchronization, session synchronization, and link monitoring help maintain consistent security enforcement and support automated failover.
Reviewed the existing network architecture, security requirements, performance needs, and failover expectations.
Designed the Active/Passive HA topology, management connectivity, dedicated HA links, and routing requirements.
Installed two Palo Alto firewalls, configured PAN-OS, and established management and HA connectivity.
Configured HA pairing, session synchronization, security policies, NAT rules, and virtual routers.
Tested firewall failover, monitored application traffic, verified session synchronization, and reviewed HA logs.
Fine-tuned HA settings, configured Panorama and SNMP monitoring, and delivered operational documentation.
Challenge: Intermittent HA link failures affected communication between the primary and secondary firewalls. Solution: Replaced faulty cables and verified physical network connectivity to restore reliable HA communication.
Challenge: Session synchronization delays created a risk of longer failover times and application interruption. Solution: Adjusted session synchronization settings and reduced timeout values to minimize failover delays.
Challenge: Security policy updates were not consistently propagating between the firewalls within the expected timeframe. Solution: Reviewed synchronization settings and used Palo Alto Panorama to validate policy replication across the HA pair.
Palo Alto Panorama and SNMP monitoring provide visibility into firewall health, synchronization status, and failover events.
Manual failover testing verified that the passive firewall could assume responsibility when the active unit became unavailable.
Application traffic testing and synchronization checks helped confirm consistent security policy enforcement during failover.
Delivered network diagrams, troubleshooting guidance, and failover management procedures for ongoing operations.
Deployed and synchronized two Palo Alto firewalls in an Active/Passive high-availability configuration.
Successfully tested firewall failover to maintain network connectivity when the active firewall became unavailable.
Reduced dependence on a single firewall and strengthened continuity during device failures or maintenance.
Maintained synchronized security policies and configurations across the firewall pair.
The Palo Alto HA deployment strengthened the client's network resilience and business continuity capabilities. Successful failover testing confirmed that the secondary firewall could assume operation while maintaining consistent security enforcement and minimizing disruption to network services.
