Active/Passive Firewall High Availability
Network Redundancy, Failover, Security Continuity
Deployed an Active/Passive Fortinet FortiGate firewall pair with dedicated HA synchronization links, session replication, centralized monitoring, and validated failover to improve network availability and maintain uninterrupted security enforcement.
The client required a highly available network security infrastructure capable of maintaining critical connectivity during firewall failures, maintenance, and unexpected disruptions.
The solution needed to deliver reliable automatic failover, consistent security policies, and scalability to support future network growth.
Remove dependence on a single firewall and strengthen network redundancy.
Minimize downtime and preserve active network sessions during firewall failover.
Maintain synchronized security policies, NAT rules, and routing configurations across both firewalls.
UI Operations deployed two Fortinet FortiGate firewalls in an Active/Passive high-availability configuration, supported by dedicated synchronization links, session replication, dynamic routing, and automated health monitoring.
The standby firewall was configured to assume the active role when a failure was detected, helping maintain network connectivity and security enforcement.
Configured two FortiGate firewalls to provide automatic failover and eliminate the firewall as a single point of failure.
Established dedicated HA links and synchronized active sessions to minimize disruption during failover.
Synchronized firewall policies, NAT rules, and routing configurations across both units.
Enabled interface health monitoring, failover detection, and centralized management through FortiManager.
The solution consists of two FortiGate firewalls operating in Active/Passive mode, connected through dedicated HA synchronization links.
The active firewall processes network traffic, while the passive firewall maintains synchronized configurations and session information, allowing it to assume traffic processing when required.
Reviewed network architecture, traffic requirements, critical network paths, and failover expectations.
Designed the Active/Passive topology, HA links, management interfaces, routing, and synchronization.
Installed FortiGate firewalls, configured FortiOS, management interfaces, and HA connectivity.
Configured HA pairing, session replication, security policies, NAT rules, and dynamic routing.
Tested automatic failover, traffic continuity, session synchronization, and security policy enforcement.
Fine-tuned failover settings, enabled monitoring, and delivered network documentation and operational guidance.
Challenge: Faulty physical connections disrupted communication between the two firewalls. Solution: Identified and replaced faulty cables, restoring stable HA link connectivity.
Challenge: Session synchronization delays affected failover performance. Solution: Adjusted synchronization settings and timeout parameters to reduce failover delays and improve session continuity.
Challenge: Policy synchronization delays created inconsistencies between the firewalls. Solution: Reviewed synchronization settings and validated configuration replication using FortiManager.
FortiManager and SNMP provided visibility into firewall health, synchronization status, and operational events.
Centralized logging and alerts supported faster identification and troubleshooting of HA-related issues.
HA settings were optimized to meet the client's stated failover requirement of 30–60 seconds.
Delivered network diagrams, HA configuration records, troubleshooting guides, and operational best practices.
Established an operational FortiGate Active/Passive firewall pair with synchronized configurations.
Failover testing confirmed successful passive firewall takeover with minimal disruption during testing.
Reduced the firewall single point of failure and strengthened continuity for critical network services.
Maintained synchronized security policies and network protection across the HA pair.
The Fortinet HA deployment strengthened the client's network availability, operational resilience, and security continuity through automatic firewall failover, synchronized configurations, and centralized monitoring. The resulting architecture reduced reliance on a single firewall and established a more resilient network security foundation for business-critical operations.
